• The first digit (5 in the case of IP55) indicates the level of protection against solid objects and dust. A 5 rating means that the enclosure provides protection against dust that could interfere with the normal operation of the equipment but it’s not completely dust-tight. It’s considered sufficient for most outdoor applications.
• The second digit (5 in the IP55 rating) signifies the level of protection against water. A 5 rating here means that the enclosure can withstand low-pressure jets of water from any direction, which is typical for rain or spraying water. This makes it suitable for outdoor conditions where such exposure is expected.

So, with an IP55 rating, the outdoor battery cabinet is designed to be resistant to conditions such as rain, splashing water, and limited dust ingress, making it suitable for outdoor installations. However, if the cabinet is to be exposed to more severe conditions such as high-pressure water jets, immersion, or heavy dust environments, a higher IP rating would be necessary.
